3 tunics and a mantl

3 tunics and a mantl

Letters between St. Agnes and St. Claire

The two series are focusing on two important and strong women who shaped the ideas of Western Europe in the 13th century. Are there any paralels from their legacy for us today? I believe so. They freely gave up their posessions, especially the royal princess Agnes. They tried to help the poor and the unfortunate. They faced many internal spiritual struggles and insecurities. They supported each other. During the time of the global pandemic we also face many challenges. Many of us deal with the insecure future, fears, others need to reduce their material comfort or social relations. It is the time of reinventing our values. It is a profound inspiration for me, and hopefully, it will also be for others.

The series has two parts. One larger format cycle of four paper objects is called "3 tunics and a mantl". These were the only possessions which the young women were allowed to own when entering the monastery.

The second series is related to the letters between St. Clara and St. Agnes. It is called "Letters between St. Agnes and St. Claire". I have selected some powerful sentences which I then embroided to a bobbin lace grid prepared for me by my mother. I have made small objects, "reliquaries" containing the wisdom and close inner ties between the two women.
